"I'll be home in twenty minutes, honey… and I've got a surprise for you."

Jessica couldn't wait. Her husband, Charles, was returning from a two week business trip.

"I'm at the airport. I have my bags and I'm heading out to the car. I can't wait to see you. I love you."

Jessica felt much better. She always worried when Charles was in the air. But with his feet safely on the ground, she breathed a sigh of relief.

Jessica waited anxiously by the front door. Every time a car passed by, she brushed back the curtains and peered out. But each time, disappointment followed. After thirty minutes, she began to pace nervously.

"Where is he?" she wondered.

"He should have been here by now."

After nearly an hour, a car door slammed in the driveway. Jessica excitedly jumped to her feet and yanked open the door, expecting to see her husband's smiling face and outstretched arms. Instead, she beheld two solemn-faced police officers. Jessica froze.

"Are you Jessica Robinson?" one officer asked.

"Yes," she quivered. "Why?… what's wrong?"

"I'm afraid we have some bad news."

Jessica began to panic.

"May we please come in?"

"Is it Charles? Is something wrong with Charles?"

"We are very sorry, Mrs. Robinson, but your husband is dead. He was hit by a drunk driver three miles from here."

Jessica shrieked in disbelief. "That's impossible! I just talked to him! We have two children to raise. We have plans… we…"

But it was true. Charles was gone. Just like that. One minute he was on the phone… the next he was dead.
