NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- A West Virginia coal mine suffered an explosion Monday, killing seven workers and leaving 19 unaccounted for, according to the mine's owner, Massey Energy Co. (MEE).

The explosion was reported at around 3:30 p.m. EDT at Upper Big Branch South Mine, about 25 miles south of Charleston, W. Va., according to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration.

The federal agency said a rescue effort is underway at the underground mine. " We are working diligently on rescue efforts and continue to partner with all of the appropriate agencies," Massey Energy's Chairman and Chief Executive Don Blankenship said in a statement. State officials did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
